10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning is not always fun for many of us. But it is important. As the winter end and we start looking forward to spring, something within us tells us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and throwing away things we’ve collected over the winter months.
But who says spring cleaning is only for the inside of your house?
The exterior of your home could probably use some refreshing after a cold, dreary winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will really improve the appearance of your home in Silver Spring, and, even more important, will provide much-needed care and maintenance that will save you a lot of money in years ahead.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the ideal time of year to clean out your gutters, since so many of leaves and debris pile up during the fall and winter months. The pollen count is at its highest during spring, making a mess in your gutters if they aren’t properly cleaned.
Plus, pests and critters are searching for places to build homes during spring, so getting your gutters cleaned out will help prevent an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning will consist of cleaning the inside and outside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, and stains and restoring them to a like-new appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Home window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. Ground floor windows will not cause you too much of a headache, but any second and third floor windows will be tougher to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a hard chore, and it will require a lot of supplies, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your home’s windows is the perfect way to get the panes and the outer frame clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You aren’t going to want clean gutters and clean windows on a dirty house. This means you are going to want to pressure wash your home too!
Pressure washing is fast, effective and doesn’t cost very much. You can clean your house, patio furniture, concrete patios, porches and walkways with very little effort. It will remove dirt and mud so they won’t stain your home, and you can also prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a deep cleaning might seem counter-productive since you will be driving on it, but actually, a clean, maintained driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.
A professional pressure washer can do wonders for driveway cleaning, whether it is concrete, asphalt, stone or another material. Also consider adding a gravel border to your home’s driveway to really help it pop!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your home’s patio probably gets the most use in the summer months, so it is easy to overlook it during the winter when you aren’t doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio could be in bad shape the first time you go onto it in spring.
Soap and water – and a little hard work – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you notice signs of mold or algae, you might need to consider a more aggressive option, like power washing, to guarantee that friends and family can enjoy your patio all summer.
6. Roof Cleaning
Algae and moss are typical roof problems in Silver Spring. While you’re cleaning the exterior of your home, it is an excellent time to clean your home’s roof as well, but you will need to use a different process than what you use for most of your home’s exterior cleaning.
If you start to notice streaks on your home’s roof, algae is most likely the cause. Moss is pretty obvious, too. These contaminants can’t be wiped off of shingles, nor can you power wash the roof. Both of these methods will damage the shingles on your home’s roof.
The best course of action for roof cleaning is to mist the shingles with a half-water, half-bleach solution and then let it sit. This mixture will eliminate any organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.
7. Spruce up the Front
The front of your home is probably what most people see, so make the best impression you can for visitors and for yourself! Coming home to a clean exterior will instantly improve your day, and it will even encourage you to spend a lot more time outside.
You can clean your porch with soap and water or a good power wash. Wipe cobwebs and mud off of the front porch, and consider painting it a new color for a really fresh look! Clean forgotten areas such as the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Garden Tools
You’ll soon be spending much more time outside, so spring is a great opportunity to organize whatever you will need for outdoor chores.
Yard tools as well as pool care equipment must all have an exact area outside your home – somewhere that it is safe from weather and out of sight so it is not a constant eyesore. Taking the time to organize in the spring allows you to appreciate the exterior of your home much more during the time of year when you are going to spend the most time outside.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your lawn, trees and garden bushes can make a big impact on the look of your home.
Get rid of weeds around your flower beds and walkways, till up places where you will be planting in the future and brush off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed killer to make lawn maintenance easier on yourself throughout the summer. Trim all bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After sitting unused for several months, your grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family ill.
Wet it down to get rid of ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber (so you don’t leave behind metal particles that can sometimes get into food) and a basic dish soap or degreaser.
